Huawei widens lead over competition in China’s smartphone market

Strengthens its position as a premium smartphone across markets

Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), the global smartphone giant, which overtook Apple in 2018, widens the lead over competition in China’s smartphone market. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide, Huawei’s smartphone shipments ranked first, with the market share reaching up to 29% in Q4 2018. The company recorded a growth of 23.3% in its shipments over the same period last year.

According to Counterpoint Research’s recent Market Pulse December 2018 report, Huawei almost doubled its market share (10%) in the premium segment growing 97% YoY with strong performance by the P20 and Mate 20 series. In China alone, the company captured 25% market share, recording a 16% year-on-year growth.

Huawei has become number two smartphone brand in the world. From a product perspective, the P-series and recently launched Mate-series are keeping it as competitive as ever at the top of the market. Sub-brand Honor, which is primarily marketed toward a younger audience and online sales, has continued to perform well across markets. The success is owed to company’s commitment to innovation, investment in the R&D and strong product portfolio.

As a leading global smartphone manufacturer and a company that puts customer at the heart of everything that it does, company’s focus is to work towards addressing users’ actual pain points through innovation, provide smart gadgets that deliver the best experience to consumers, and become a culturally vibrant tech loved by global consumers. The aim is to keep bringing consumers smart devices that deliver the best experience. A testament of company’s success is its performance in H1 2018, whereby Huawei’s market share ranked No. 1 in 8 countries including China, Russia, Spain, Poland, Italy, and No.2 in another 30 countries, including Finland, Hungary, Austria, the UAE, Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia.

The impressive performances of Huawei’s flagship and mid-market smartphones have greatly improved the value of the Huawei brand: Huawei to 12th spot on Brand Finance Global 500 2019,  ranked 68 in Interbrand Best Global Brands 2018, was named number 48 on BrandZ’s Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list, and number 79 on Forbes’ Most Valuable Brands list. Huawei was the only Chinese company that managed to secure a spot on Forbes’ 2018 top 100 list.
