Features of Optics Fiber Technology
The technology of fiber has been around now for quite a long time. The technological advances in fiber optics have altered many fields. Fiber originated long back during the Roman times. It’s indeed the technology of the future as it has many advantages over other traditional technology of coaxial cables. The use of fiber in telecommunication introduced fiber to the home technology which is nothing but your home broadband connection. Today you can see fiber is widely used in the field of Medical Science, Data Storage, Telecommunications, Networking, etc.
The following are some of the splendid features of fiber that makes it stand apart from other technologies.
- Longer Transmission Distance – Fiber technology can transmit light pulses over long distances. There are two types of fiber viz. Single mode and multi-mode. Single mode fiber has a thin core and transmits pulses in a unidirectional path. While the multi-mode fiber transmits light pulses in a multi-directional path. Fiber is made of glass or plastic filaments and can transport signals over long distances.
- High Bandwidth – Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data transferred and is different from the speeds. Fiber transfers more bits of data as it uses light for transmission. Bandwidth is a significant factor as higher the bandwidth faster will be your internet speed.
- Faster Speeds – Fiber optics are efficient and faster than regular cable broadband. They offer higher upload and download speeds. The internet speed is in gigabit and offers to speed up to 1Gbps. The internet experience is constantly evolving and you can easily get affordable broadband plans that offer speed of 1Gbps.
- Secure Transmission – In fiber optic cable intrusion of data is impossible as the data transfer occurs via light pulses and is free from interference. In the case of traditional copper wires, the network can experience electromagnetic interference. Due to the absence of interference in fiber optics data can be transferred securely.
- Flexible in Nature – The fiber cables are made from thin glass material. Since pure glass form is used in its making it can bend and is flexible.
Due to the splendid properties like lower attenuation and interference Fiber technology has caused disruptive innovation in different areas of science & technology.
Medical science has been using fiber technology to develop various biomedical sensors. These sensors can be used for accurate diagnosis, one prevalent medical application is Endoscopy.
The use of fiber technology in broadband has come in light after Reliance Jio introduced its broadband service called JioFiber. Fiber technology has revolutionized the home broadband and now major telecom operators like Airtel, MTNL, BSNL and Reliance Jio have their fiber broadband service. The telecom industry fiber will refine the communication methods and this will lead to an increase in demand for fiber in the future.
The secure transmission property of fiber has gained importance in Military operations. The sturdiness and high durability make it withstand unprecedented environmental conditions. Also, its high immunity to resist unwanted data leaks makes it a more secure option than traditional cables.
The sonar application of fiber technology in the Navy is used to develop hydrophones. The fiber-based hydrophones are used for recording and listening of underwater sound. These fiber hydrophones can be used to measure high frequency in harsh fields.
As fiber technology assures the faster transmission of data over long distances it is used in the field of Networking. Multiple servers are connected using the fiber cable for faster transmission over longer distances.
Fiber Optics is the cutting edge technology that will become more popular once it becomes inexpensive and readily available. It has revolutionized many fields of science and technology and offers digital experiences at par.
