This is How iOT is going to change the world
The key to iOT is machine to machine communication. An idea that would have branded you as a witch just a few years ago is today in the realm of possibility. Kevin Ashton, coined the definition of iOT in 1999. He imagined a world where physical objects, through sensors will be connected to the internet. iOT has grown beyond the simple definition captured by Ashton and is sprawling outside the borders.
How big and how soon
Analysts from Business Insider estimate that by the year 2020 or barely two years from now there will be around 24 billion iOT devices in the world.
Deloitte has predicted that the impact of iOT in the world would amount to 11 trillion dollars. That’s bigger than the GDP of some countries.
There’s good news for India too. The number of iOT units is predicted to grow at a pace of 31 times as that of now and reach a market value of 9 billion USD.
And with iOT influencing a lot more technologies than just home appliances the impact could be bigger than predicted.
When inventors of the first computer arranged vaccum tubes together to create a digital processing system they never imagined that merely 2 decades later the computer will become personal and occupy every home, office and hand.
Internet of things is one such tech that’s going to revolutionize everything.
iOT will make smart cities possible, drive revolution in self-driving cars, automate chores like refilling milk and buying groceries and perhaps combined with a 3d printer will print food and necessities as well.
At present, the functions extend themselves to the basics. The technology is behind automatic lighting systems that are able to detect sunlight and switch themselves off. They can also hear people walk into a room and switch on the light and switch it off when people leave the room.
The sensors are also helping the government. They can monitor water usage and wastage, identify leaks by sensing usage more than what’s common and send remedial teams.
Waste disposal and waste management with smart dustbins that can detect when they’re full and alert disposal agents accordingly effectively distributes manpower to where it’s needed most. This saves costs and time.
In developing countries like India where 60% of the population is engaged in agricultural activities iOT is helping irrigation systems distribute water more effeciently adjusting distribution to rainfall levels and upping the supply when temperature rises due to high heat and humidity levels.
What lies in store for the future?
Data driven decisions will become the norm.
With so much data flowing around, taking data-driven decisions is going to be the norm.
For instance, your car will be connected to the internet and even before you enter the driver’s seat will have gauged the traffic levels to your office and would have selected the ideal route.
That way you will avoid the most frustrating thing about driving- traffic.
Smart life will prevail
Our lives are going to change courtesy of Big data and the powers that that kind of data bestows us.
If you’re often complaining of sleep problems, you will be happy to find yourself on a bed that measures how you sleep, your REM sleep pattern and minimizes ambient noise for you. The smart bed would also adjust bed incline and probably vary the humidity and room temperature automatically based on sleep rhythm.
Your toothbrush will have sensors that only clean your teeth well but also give you suggestions on how best to accomplish brushing. Don’t be surprised if your brush books an appointment with your dentist based on your dental health. The fridge will already know if the milk levels are running low and purchase them. Again, you will never eat spoilt eggs because your fridge would know egg health too.
Starting from when you wake up to when you reach office and come back. The way you shop for things and the way your children learn will be influenced by the possibilities afforded by internet of things (IOT).
