Skills needed for next-generation future Technologist – An interview with Sanjay Goyal, Times Internet

Skills needed for the next-generation future technologist
(Sanjay Goyal-VP-TIMES INTERNET Ltd, Head of Product and Technology, Times Jobs and TechGig)

Q1. With TechGig ramping up tech talent in the country-what are some of your initiatives to address the same?

Ans: TechGig is a site which is primarily for coders and developing fraternity to learn, competes and grow. We start working with freshers who have just passed the college or are even in school.
It is an open opportunity for everybody. People can come and visit the website and can read different examples. They can also learn programming and how to code and compete with other programmers.
Moreover, they can also become a part of the leaderboards, they can see where they stand in the coding fraternity and get into different contests hosted by multi-national IT companies.
In this regard, we can say that we are trying to popularise programming in our country which is already full of programmers and we just want to make the number bigger by the day.
Q2. From your vast global and local experience, how would you rate the stature of a fresh tech resource; 5 to 6 years experienced resource and a 15+ years’ experience technology resource from the standpoint of being a desirable talent for hiring in the current age? What would you recommend to each of these categories of candidates?
Ans: India has always benefited from a curriculum which is heavily dominated by mathematics and science.
While there are always conversations that Indian Education System needs to undergo changes, I think this is fairly strong even today, and the reason why people like me succeeded in this industry is that we had very strong mathematics and science influence in our school and college and that always helped us.
So, the fresh graduates or even people possessing an experience of 5 to 6 years are fairly competitive and the newer technologies that are coming out in the market it really requires you to unlearn a lot of old technologies to become competitive with the new ones.
Now considering these challenges I would say that millennials are at a higher advantage of learning these technologies and improving on their productivity. For people with higher experience band, it is definitely a  challenge for them to upgrade to newer technologies and be familiar with the new changes in the industry.
Q3.In addition to the knowledge, passion and soft skills which are of prime importance for a future techie, could you please highlight what are some of the most-in-demand technical skills?
Ans: One thing, I would like to add before we jump to the technical skills that soft-skills, while considered easier to get, are not really easy to get. Global Business Leader, Mr. Warren Buffett, had mentioned that communication is the first and the most important skill that people should grasp because until and unless you cannot communicate  your knowledge is useless.
So, soft-skils and communication are definitely the need of the hour. People need to work hard on their communication skills as that matters and in terms of technologies, the latest technologies which are out in the market are blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
These require new skills but to be honest the fundamental concepts are still the same. For example, in the blockchain, you are still using the stuff that was used in C++ or C and the hashing algorithms that we had learned in college (1st year).
The technologies are the same it’s just that the newer innovative uses are coming out so people need to learn these technologies fast in order to be valuable in the market.
Q4. As Coding is becoming a talent which seems to be now percolating in undergraduate level and at various campuses. Do you see that the challenges being resolved by these young techies at various hackathons are different than the challenges they face in real life?
Ans: So hackathons, primarily are based on challenges that companies face in real life and most of the time the topic which is picked up in hackathons is that companies are not able to solve a problem and they require a fresh mind to suggest solutions that could possibly solve them.
I recently met somebody where the gentlemen were of the view that he would love to do hackathons and outsource solutions to masses so that they get one solution which is worthwhile.
